![]() Somehow, the combination of Kahlua Coffee Liqueur, Bailey’s Irish Cream, and an orange-flavored triple sec like Cointreau kicked ass at the time, and kept kicking ass through the ’80s. Here’s another layered, ultra-sweet shot like The Slippery Nipple, named in honor of the band that made rock lobsters famous. Bartles & Jaymes definitely dominated the style in the ’80s, thanks largely to its oddly folksy commercials featuring the older gentlemen founders. Bartles & Jaymes Wine CoolersĪnytime someone in the ’80s had occasion to bring a four-pack of wine coolers somewhere, it’s a pretty fair bet things were going (or were about to be going) pretty awesome. Invented in Queens, eventually adored everywhere, it’s equal parts Sambuca (a anise-seed liqueur often mixed with espresso) and Bailey’s Irish Cream. The ’80s were a pretty big era for sweet mixed drinks and novelty shots, and The Slippery Nipple might be the most unapologetic combination of the two. Fun fact: for a wine that basically put Sutter Home on the map, it was actually created by accident. Wine snobbery hadn’t escalated to the nosebleed heights it enjoys today, and there was still some sense that White Zin might share some of the early evidence of “health benefits” found in red wine. It probably shouldn’t surprise that something pink, sweet, and easy to drink became hugely popular in the 1980s. Appropriate, as folks guzzling them in the ’80s tended to end up ridiculously lit. Kind of a tough last name to have, but Butt overcame it when he created the sweet and sour liquor bomb that came to be know as the LIT. The Long Island Iced Tea was actually invented in the ’70s, on Long Island, by a man called Bob “Rosebud” Butt. Remember, the ’80s had a weird idea of what the future was going to look like-possibly more accurate in Blade Runner than Back to the Future II, but we’ll see. The ’80s loved its Blue Curacao, so a lot of the drinks you’d see out there looked like this Blue Lagoon. So sit back, cue up some Tiffany, and celebrate an era when hair was bigger, denim was always faded, and drinks were more fun and a lot less “cool.” Don’t worry, just like your 4th grade picture, drinking culture also had a phase where everything had to either be pink or big or flashy. But it’s kind of fascinating to look at how drinking culture “grew up” alongside you. Unless you were a teen (with a fake ID) in the ’80s, you probably weren’t actually drinking any of these. Who could say no to an Ecto Cooler-fueled Mario Brothers marathon followed by some Skip It?Īnd if marketing teams across the country are paying attention as ’80s kids and our bank accounts slowly grow into middle age and precarious solvency, we’ll actually probably start to see ’80s-era nostalgia crammed into car and breakfast cereal commercials. And to be honest, we wouldn’t mind a brief resurgence of ’80s nostalgia. For many functioning, or semi-functioning, adults, the ’80s were a formative time. ![]() Using this option you can track snap points of geometries like center, midpoint, endpoint etc and make geometries with their reference. ![]() With polar tracking active you can make lines inclined to any angle which is defined in the polar tracking increment angle. Our experiment demonstrates evidence in support of the crayfish’s ability to detect and appropriately respond to predator cues alone and in combination with conspecific alarm cues. Moreover, these responses were magnified when crayfish were exposed to predator cues in combination with conspecific alarm cues. We found crayfish increased their proportion of time spent frozen and reduced their proportion of time spent active in the tank when exposed to either predator cue. We randomly assigned crayfish to predator cue and conspecific alarm cue combinations and recorded frozen behavior, appendage movement, locomotion, and refuge use. Largemouth bass occur sympatrically with hellbenders and are known to induce distinct responses in rusty crayfish. We investigated crayfish responses to hellbender salamander ( Cryptobranchus alleganiensis, a dominant predator of crayfish) cues and compared these to responses to largemouth bass ( Micropterus salmoides) cues. However, no studies have introduced amphibian cues. Rusty crayfish ( Orconectes rusticus) reduce activity, increase refuge use, and make defensive displays after detecting fish predator cues. April Vollmer has recently published an excellent book " Japanese Woodblock Print Workshop" which is an well written guide to the art and craft of mokuhanga from history to technique and inspiration.Mokuhanga means 'woodblock print' in Japanese.A few people were asking about how I inked and printed a new print that I’ve started, so I’m posting a quick description of my newest “jig-thingie”. Sample Reference Page and 8.If you’re not familiar with shin-hangaor ‘new prints’ from the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s, there was a group of artists that were assembled by Shōzaburō Watanabe. Of these artists, the most notable being Shinsui Ito, Kawase Hasui, and Hiroshi Yoshida. The last two are my main influences- they both were originally painters and brought a western-style flavor to landscapes. “To emulate their paintings shin-hanga artists used ukiyo-e (by then a long-dead period) style woodblock printing techniques which were hybridized by introducing multiple layering and other innovative techniques. This allowed for a ‘mini-renaissance’ for woodblock.” I hope that people like Paul Binnie (London), Matt Brown (NH), Leon Loughridge (CO), Yours Truly and others can give some life back to the movement- should we call it “ Western shin-hanga“?Įither way, I have posted several process print series from Hiroshi Yoshida in which there were obvious wiping one such image from his “Kagurazaka Dori” shows both techniques: Keyblock for Hiroshi Yoshida’s “ Kagurazaka Dori” in which the lights are wiped of ink. The red areas on the left are using the same keyblock, but a mask is used for selective printing. This dovetails with the previously- wiped areas on the previously-printed keyblock impression to create a sense of glowing through the depiction of glare.Ībove you can see the masked areas (indicated by the red glow of the lights) using the keyblock below the wiped areas in the earlier-printed brown keyblock above. Here is a video of me using similar techniques. In case the video doesn’t load, here’s the Youtube link.ĭuring the video I mention that I’ve wondered how such technically complex shin-hanga prints were made using such a small number of blocks. Blocks are very often used multiple times for different colors, but they are generally separated by some space to avoid inking the wrong area. By using a mask, the printer could isolate areas without this concern. Wiping also allows for dual duty as you can see in one of my prints “Sunfish Pond, NJ” #8 from The Appalachian Trail Complete Prints series. The green on the lake reflections is produced by the same medium green block as the trees, but before printing, I wiped the reflection areas which gives a hint of color rather that the full value. He also worked on Cruden Bay in Scotland and Royal Lytham & St. Elsewhere in Great Britain, he designed 36 highly regarded seaside holes at Saunton and 36 inland holes at Berkshire. When the course opened in 1904, it became an instant success. In creating what is now known as the Old Course at Walton Heath, Fowler rode horseback over the 600-acre site for several months until he got a sense of where to place the holes. He was also recognized in his time as one of the great designers of links courses.Īfter playing golf on courses that he felt were very mechanical and had a repetitive feel to them, he had his first chance to design the kind of course he wanted to create back in 1902 at an English Club called Walton Heath. He tried to use topography to test golfers, not manmade contrivances. He is credited with making an important transition into the modern era from the rudimentary and formalistic designs of the past. Born in 1856, he was actually one of the prime pioneers among golf course architects who believed that courses should have a natural design that follows the lay of the land. William Herbert Fowler was "perhaps the most daring and original of all golfing architects, and gifted with an inspired eye for the possibility of a golfing country," writer Bernard Darwin has said about the British architect who designed our course way back in 1924.įowler is not a household name, however, and his work is often not familiar to today's golfers. In contrast, if the sample size is too large, too many variables-beyond those that researchers want to evaluate in the study-may become statistically significant. If the sample size is too small, even if a large therapeutic effect is observed, the possibility that it could be caused by random variations cannot be excluded. Studies with inappropriate sample sizes or powers do not provide accurate estimates and therefore report inappropriate information on the treatment effect, making evidence-based decisions or judgments difficult. From a scientific viewpoint, research should provide an accurate estimate of the therapeutic effect, which may lead to evidence-based decisions or judgments. However, this method of determination is often not scientific, logical, economical, or even ethical. However, the sample size is often arbitrarily chosen or reflects limits of resource allocation. Therefore, researchers use various methods to select samples representing the entire population, to analyze the data from the selected samples, and to estimate the parameters of the entire population, making it very important to determine the appropriate sample size to answer the research question. In some cases, it is more accurate to conduct a study of appropriately selected samples than to conduct a study of the entire population. However, in most cases, conducting a study of the entire population is impractical, if not impossible, and would be inefficient. Introduction Background/rationale If research can be conducted among the entire population of interest, the researchers would obtain more accurate findings.
